Chilean President Sebastian Pinera sold TV broadcaster Chilevision to Time Warner for an estimated $150 million.

Mexico has fired 10% of its federal police force this year for failing corruption checks.  Federal police are required to undergo periodic lie detector, psychological and drug exams as well as investigations into their finances and personal life.  So far 3,200 of the approximately 35,000 federal police officers have been dismissed this year.  

Cristina Saralegui announced that her last episode of "El Show de Cristina" will air on November 1st.  The show has aired on Univision since 1989.  

The State Department recommended that U.S. government employees in Monterrey, Mexico send their children elsewhere due to drug violence-related security risks.  A travel warning was also issued last week after a shooting in front of the American Foundation School.

Mexican authorities captured Edgar Valdez Villarreal "La Barbie" this week.  Valdez Villarreal is from Texas, where he was apparently a star football player in high school.  He is wanted in Mexico and also the U.S., where there is a $2 million reward for his capture.  

According to new data revealed in USA Today, the 2010-11 kindergarten class is overwhelmingly Hispanic, making up about 25% of 5-year-olds.

Three teens have been killed in the last two weeks in the Colombian town of Puerto Asis after a hit list with 69 names was posted on Facebook. The list, posted on August 17th, gave the people three days to leave town or die. The source of the list and the killings is still under investigation.

Aleks Syntek stopped posting on Twitter after receiving feedback, much of it negative, for his song "El Futuro es Milenario", the official theme of the Mexican Bicentennial celebration.  Syntek, however, returned to Twitter just a few days later to announce that he would begin tweeting again on Sept. 8th.   

Three teens received seven-year prison sentences on Wednesday for the 2008 stabbing death of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in a New York City suburb. The deadly attack on Lucero was part of a series of attacks the group of teens  had directed toward Hispanics.

Steve Carrell has reportedly signed on to produce and star in a remake of Juan Taratuto's "Un Novio para Mi Mujer", an Argentine comedy starring Valeria Bertuccelli.    

Camila, Alex Cuba, JotDog and Arturo Sandoval will announce nominees for the 11th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards at the press conference taking place on September 8th in Los Angeles.  Nominees will be posted online following the announcement on www.latingrammy.com

Mexicana Airlines grounded all flights and cancelled all routes to Latin America, the U.S. and Europe last week citing a slump in Mexican tourism as one of the primary reasons.  The abrupt shutdown left travelers stranded and caused chaos over the weekend in Mexico City's airport.  

LALIFF (Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival) announced the winners of the Cinelatino Audience Choice Awards.  Marcel Rasquin's "Hermano" took home the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature and "Harvest of Loneliness", directed by Gilbert Gonzalez and Vivian Price, won Best Documentary.  Fina Torres' "Havana Eva" took home the Rita Award for Best Film at the festival.  

A recent NPR feature focuses on Andrew Loog Oldham, the first manager of the Rolling Stones, who now resides in Bogota, Colombia and produces Argentine rock band Ratones Paranoicos.  

Jessica Alba will reportedly star in the upcoming Robert Rodriguez' feature "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World".  

Remy Gonzalez, husband of "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro's sister, was arrested on August 18th on charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assualt, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child.  He is being held on $300,000 bail.

Monserrat Ibarra, a fan that was hit in the eye with a drumstick during an Alejandra Guzman concert, has lost vision in one eye due to the incident.  Doctors hope to perform a surgery to repair some of the damage.

Team People en Español has joined the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events in New York on Sept. 12th and Dallas on October 16th to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.  Adamari Lopez, a breast cancer survivor, is the team captain and will be present at both events.  NYC Race & Dallas Race

TLC will debut a new series, "Sextuplets Take New York", on September 14th.  The show stars Victor and Digna Carpio and their sextuplets, from Queens, NY.  

McDonald's will return as a sponsor of the 11th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, taking place on November 11th in Las Vegas.  McDonald's is launching the "Rock Hola! Con McDonald's" sweepstakes, awarding 5 grand prize winners a trip for four to attend the awards.  www.meencanta.com
