Mexican presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum was stopped at a roadblock in Chiapas by masked men over the weekend.  According to a video of the incident the men told her “When you get to power, remember the mountains, remember the poor people. That's all we have to say. We are not against the government; we are here so you see the disaster that is Comalapa."
The Library of Congress entered Juan Gabriel’s “Amor Eterno” and Hector Lavoe’s “El Cantante” into the National Recording Registry. 
The U.S. Senate dismissed impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last week.  House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas in February for allegedly“willfully and systematically” refusing to enforce immigration laws.

According to recent data from the RIAA, Latin music revenue surpassed $1 billion in 2023 for the second year in a row, with the market growing 16% over the previous year. 

The Biden administration reinstated sanctions on Venezuela’s oil and gas sectors last week, after accusing Nicolas Maduro of oppressing his opponents in the country’s upcoming presidential elections.

Mexico broke diplomatic ties with Ecuador after Ecuadorean police raided the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had been seeking asylum there. Venezuela closed its embassy in Ecuador last week in solidarity with Mexico. 
Former Nortec Collective member Jorge Verdin, aka “Clorofila”, passed away last week at age 59. Hailing from Tijuana, Nortec Collective was a pioneering force in bringing Mexican electronic music to a global audience.
Former Ecuadorian comptroller Carlos Ramon Polit was found guilty of money laundering in a federal court in Miami this week. Polit was charged with taking millions of dollars in bribes and instructing his son, a banker in Miami, to launder the money.  
Ana de Armas fans Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe settled a lawsuit against Universal for including de Armas in the trailer for “Yesterday” when the actress’ scenes were cut from the film. 
Filmmaker Lourdes Portillo died at age 80 over the weekend at her home in San Francisco.  Portillo was known for her work writing, producing and directing films and videos expressing the  emotions and circumstances of Latin American, Mexican and Chicano experiences. 
The 25th Annual Latin Grammy Awards will be held in Miami this year. Nominations will be announced on September 17th, while the award show will air live on Univision, Galavisión and ViX on November 14th.
In partnership with She is the Music, the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation launched its third annual mentorship program and a virtual panel entitled Ladies of Entertainment Connect TogetHER. This year’s mentors include Róndine Alcalá, Marcella Araica, Maria Elisa Ayerbe, Mon Laferte, Mayna Nevarez, Pamela Silva, Simone Torres, Mónica Vélez and Ana Villacorta López.
According to recent Border Patrol data, U.S. border arrests fell 2.3% from February to March due to increased immigration enforcement in Mexico, marking the first time that arrests fell from February to March since 2017. 
Dr. Martha Bernal, the first Latina and Mexican American woman to earn a Ph.D in psychology in the United States, was featured in a Google Doodle recently on what would have been her 93rd birthday. 
The Latin Recording Academy® hosted the Latin GRAMMY® Celebra: Paco de Lucía event in Cádiz, honoring the influential flamenco guitarist.   The event was co-financed by the Programa FEDER Andalucía 2021-2027 and the Regional Government of Andalucía and sponsored by the City of Cádiz and the Enrique Tomás brand of jamón ibérico.
Telemundo, the exclusive Spanish-language home of the Olympic Games in the United States, is gearing up for its broadcast of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics with the most extensive Olympic coverage in Spanish-language media history with more programming hours than ever before across Telemundo, Universo and Peacock. Coverage kicks off two days before the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, July 24 with the Men’s Soccer Competition live on Telemundo, Universo and Peacock at 8 a.m. ET. 
The Heat Latin Music Awards will celebrate its 10th anniversary in the Dominican Republic on July 11th. This year’s awards will include 10 new categories.
Apple TV+ will debut its new six-episode dramedy “Land of Women”on Wednesday, June 26th starring Carmen Maura, Victoria Bazúa, and Eva Longoria, who is also the executive producer of the show. The series is inspired by inspired by Sandra Barneda’s best selling novel “La tierra de las mujeres," 
The Green Bay Packers will play the Philadelphia Eagles in the first-ever regular season game to be played in Brazil on Friday, September 6th as part of the NFL’s 2024 International Games.
Los Lobos is the subject of the documentary, Los Lobos Native Sons, which is currently in production and slated for release in 2025.  The film is co-directed by Doug Blush (Like A Rolling Stone, Mr. Soul!, 20 Feet From Stardom, and last year’s Academy Award winner The Elephant Whisperers) and Piero F. Gutini and produced by Robert Corsini and Flavio Morales.

Catalonian rapper Morad began a six-month jail sentence in Barcelona for failing to respond to court summons due to traffic violations and driving without a license. 
Pepsi will debut the new series "Talking Sabor," on Hulu on April 24th. Hosted by chef Aarón Sánchez, the series was created to celebrate the cultural, community and economic contributions of Hispanic entrepreneurs in the U.S.

Mexico’s Bobo Producciones, the company behind the 90’s Pop Tour, has expanded into management, A&R, marketing and a label, Bobo Music.  The company is led by former OV7 member Ari Borovoy alongside his brother Jack Borovoy and Sonia Salvador and as well as its executive team including Humberto Calderon, Sabo Romo and Eliseo Reyna. 
NTERTAIN has acquired the Official Latino Film Festival to announce the formation of the NVISION Film & Music Festival, taking place October 10-12th in Palm Springs. 
Jacques Audiard’s new film “Emilia Pérez”, starring Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldana and Edgar Ramirez, will debut at the Cannes Film Festival next month. The musical crime comedy tells the story of a cartel leader who has a sex change to evade the law.
Francisca Valenzuela’s Ruidosa Festival will be held at New York’s Lincoln Center on August 10th.  Artists on the lineup include Valenzuela, as well as iLe, Buscabulla, Salt Cathedral, Mireya Ramos, from Flor de Toloache and others.
MediaCo Holding Inc. announced its acquisition of Estrella Media’s network, content, digital and commercial operations. MediaCo, which operates marquee urban radio stations HOT 97 and WBLS 107.5 in New York City, will be adding Estrella Media’s Spanish-language video, audio, and digital content operations under the same umbrella.

Latinos in Sports, a joint venture focusing on content, careers, and convenings highlighting the power of Latinos in the global sports industry, will host its first invite-only event on May 3rd in Miami 
The 3rd annual Mexican-American Film & Television Festival and Awards will take place April 20-21st in Los Angeles. The event is hosted by the Mexican-American Cultural Education Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to fostering cultural education and inclusivity. This year’s theme honors the contributions of Mexican-American/Chicana filmmakers.
